Better known for its intellectual heritage, the city of Vienna is hosting VIENNA ART WEEK 2011 from November 14 through November 20. This year’s motto, “Reflecting Reality,” anchors the showcased contemporary art to famous Viennese psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud who understood art as a means of reflection and analysis.

An off-the-beaten-path journey is offered to the adventurous collector who will have the opportunity to explore the city’s art scene during VIENNA ART WEEK as well as a different aspect of the historic city as a center for international contemporary art.

For those faithful to the early days of Modernism, auction house DOROTHEUM will host three auctions: “Classical Modernism,” “Contemporary Art, “ and “Design.”

Much anticipation is building up for the opening of the exhibit “Hinterland Meets Iran,” that explores space as depicted on fabrics and pieces of clothing, with motifs reflecting either Austrian homeland idylls or, in this year’s case, the Iranian garden. In ancient Persia, the Iranian Hinterland was a garden outside the city, a small green paradise hidden behind high walls. Contemporary Iranian artists reinterpret the theme in a show that has already been shown in the Azad Gallery in Tehran in 2010.
