Chicago Art Expo 2013

The rooftop at the James Hotel New York became some sort of checkpoint for Chicagoans and New Yorkers last Friday. The former had just flown in for the Frieze Art Fair 2013 on Randall’s Island whereas the latter stopped by to check the competition. In the world of modern and contemporary art, two major artistic centers, New York and Los Angeles, are known to be rivals in a contest that involves artists, dealers, artwork, funding, and attention. The power shifts from the East coast to the West and back, while the middle states have been busy building great collections.

Chicago Art Expo, in its second year in 2013, is organizing a series of events in September to highlight some of these collections that have been forming over the years. Art dealers, institutions, and collectors are marking their presence and their role in supporting the arts with a curated selection of international contemporary art. The Expo will take place at the Navy Pier’s Festival Hall (600 E. Grand Ave.), from September 19 through 22. Chicago Art Week is set to begin on September 16 and runs through the 20th.

Undoubtedly, Chicago Art Expo is dotting every serious collector’s calendar. It is also set to make a mark on the landscape of contemporary art fairs and to offer a third alternative, a center of gravity perhaps, to the highly polarized American art market.
