Simen Johan’s sublime

Simen Johan’s show of digitally manipulated photographs of animals currently on view at Yossi Milo Gallery in New York City seems uncomfortably overpowering. Each picture is the result of Johan’s imagination as it juxtaposes images of animals against completely unfamiliar (to them) landscapes. It is all done in large scale and tightly constructed environments that exude of opulence and decay, of vitality and death. Perhaps a memento mori to our ever- and all-consuming civilization, these images are a contemporary interpretation of the sublime. The show will be on view through December 7, 2013.
